Relaxing On The Road, Walking On The Beach, And Loving The View With It's Waterfalls!

Water relaxes me, and so does driving on a long trip. I love the beach and the sea gulls, cranes, porpoises, even the pidgeons. We go twice a year to either the North Carolina or South Carolina coast.  I'm not a big Florida fan, although the beaches are gorgeous, and I've been to almost every beach there in my lifetime.  I do like Fort Myers Beach. The heat is not my favorite, but I love the ocean early in the morning or at sunset anywhere. Wading is one of my favorite past times, it takes me back to my childhood. The sea air is a beautiful thing.

Even though I like swimming..the beach for me is about the ocean smells and sounds,  and the birds. The beach is about great seafood, walking on the beach, and watching the seagulls.  The cranes, porpoises, or sea turtles are just a plus on a getaway. I like to visit before the intense heat of the summer or afterward.

The seafood boils in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana are great, and I enjoyed that part of my time there in the eighties, as a reservist. The panhandle of Florida has those gorgeous white beaches, but the cities are a little too intense for my taste. I loved Biloxi, MS and Destin, Fl, but haven't been there since before Katrina. The historical Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Fl was a great place.

Myrtle Beach, SC is best for activities and people, but  the "outer banks" of NC are great for those less populated trips. The ferry rides are such fun.  Duck, Kitty Hawk, and Kill Devil Hills offer Beach Kite Flying, and sunbathing without crowds in Spring. I like Manteo, and Roanoke Island has "The Lost Tribe" plays, and the Virginia Dare History. So much to do in Summer on the Outer Banks.

Hilton Head, SC is alright, but too isolated and upscale for my taste. I do not golf. Savannah is too populated, and I-95 can get bogged down. Georgia's coast is too expensive, and Georgia beaches are homes to the big dogs of world governments like Jekyll Island.  St Simon's Island is great, but lots more private ownership, than I like for a quick vacation. Edisto Beach, SC is beautiful, but hard to get too, and private ownership too.  I'm not big on timeshares due to my love of change. Tybee Island, Ga and downtown Savannah are popular.

Charleston, SC leads to either Folly Beach or Isle of Palms (another favorite mostly privately owned), and my two favorite sea food restaurants on the island penisula closed in early nineties. Charleston is difficult to get around in traffic, and one of two bridges are necessary for Sullivans Island or the Isle of Palms...love the new bridge there downtown.  The Mark Clark bridge is basic, and easier to reach the Island. A lot of junk has washed up on Folly Beach in years past, and a lot of the beach is private homes. Kiawah is private also, and a long drive, it's the problem with many of the lower SC beaches. Golfing is big.

Because of my fair skin, there is zero sunbathing for me, yet the water is a soother of my soul whether it's beach, pool, creeks, rivers, or waterfalls. We have gorgeous waterfalls here in the mountains, and the creeks are great for fishing, plus our rivers give us great places to picnic at the State Parks, etc. I'm big on making sandwiches, or taking a picnic basket and heading for the river in Spring, Summer or Fall. In fact, I practically raised my son at the river...he still camps and goes there with his family all summer long, and we have the climate for it here.  Being spontaneous means we might be eating at the river anytime.

Trips for me are sanctuaries for meditation, and reflection on something for which I need to make a decision. Over the years I have found that getting out of my normal routine and home atmosphere lends itself to a neutral place, where prayer and connection to truth are easier found. All of us make mistakes and I'm no different, however my best decisions have been made in out of way places with time for reflection, prayer, and quiet. Relaxing for me includes water of some type, and a peaceful atmosphere, with nature as a background.

Lovely history and beautiful images. I have often thought about how lonely you could get on those outerbanks oround the Carolinas. Thanks for the pictures and images. Good writing.

For me there is no such thing as lonely...I've always enjoyed solitude with nature.

I should have talked about the beautiful 'lighthouses on the coast", but everytime I go at least one or two are under construction. They are spred out across the coast, and it's time consuming to visit all the lighthouses.

I love to put my car on the ferry (I hope the economy hasn't stopped that) and take the four hour ride over to the Island, then drive upward to VA...so beautiful.

Hi Ella,

Thank you for the beautiful beach imagry. My love of all things ocean is right up there next to the God of my non-understanding. The mystery of both soothes me beyond words.

Blessings, dawn

I've lived in MTNS in three states in my lifetime, and I love it..but tranquility to think and make decisions seems so easy at the solitary beach, with birds, peaceful ocean waves. and the salty air. I can breathe so much clearer there...
