The New Year Deserves A New Start With Exercise And A Healthy Lifestyle For Me!

New Years Resolutions are made and broken by the thousands every year, and keeping a resolution becomes a burden, if we shoot for the moon. I don't drink, so I can't make that one, and I don't smoke, so that's another one that's out. I don't believe in diets, because if you quit eating, then you will gain back every pound; and then some. So I guess the "Exercise Resolution with Healthier Eating" will have to be mine. I'm going to tackle this one, because I have always been conscience of trying to be healthy...now that does not mean I always succeed. We all have some food desires, that aren't in our best interest.
My husband was raised on 'beans and tators", with lots of pork thrown in...we have had more battles over food than anything, but never real arguments. We discuss, and he gets his foods. I like beans and potatoes in small amounts, but not the rest of it.
“What do you need to change?”
Actually, I think it was the tube they rammed up his nose, and down his throat that got his attention this time. Years ago the doctor warned him about it, even telling him if he didn't quit he might want to consider picking me out a new husband. Now that upset him, but he only quit for four months, not enough. No need to worry about that, I'm too old. That was well over ten years ago.
So now here we are, after several emergencies, in which he was hospitalized the last five years. We (it affects me too) live with his COPD, Crohns Disease, Rhumetoid Arthritis, Prostrate Issues, and his unhealthy diet. Hubby is quite a bit older than I am, and he is not swayed by my opinion. I tried many times to get him to skip certain foods, because I don't eat them; a no go. As long as he could cook there were his favorites, even the doctor urged him to eat like I do
to no avail. We all make choices, and suffer the consequences for it.
Two weeks ago, when he passed out from lack of oxygen, the Cat Scan showed 'small bowel obstruction', and if I had not fought to get him to go with the EMTs when he came to, who knows. He stayed almost a week this time. Thank God he had good work insurance that supplements. This past week since he came home; he is listening to me more, and actually enjoying the stewed prunes, and sticking with the nutritionist suggestions.
I have always known healthy food is a choice, and I am responsible for myself. Nagging isn't my style, and it doesn't work with most men anyway. We have a peaceful loving marriage, and food will not ruin it, so I try to use humor. At least now he is listening, and even excercising a little. There are new doctors beginning this Friday for new tests, another colonoscopy, this isn't over yet.
At any time another hospital visit may be needed due to Crohns. We have seen many turns and quick changes that seem to appear overnight. So if I disappear for days at a time you know why; he doesn't like me to write about him, so I'll move on to the assignment at hand. A New Year requires new ambitions.
This year, I had eye surgery twice myself in June, 2011, now my distant vision is 20/20. So I am working on being better bit by bit. I used to walk at least a mile or two every day or so, and years ago I was a runner (before the accidents), in fact I could run a seven minute mile in my thirties. Of course, things changed later due to my own back injury. On the bright side - due to my athletic frame, and my Chiropractor, I've managed to hold or maintain. I need to shape up! Now is as good a time as any.
I don't want to end up not being as active as I need, while getting older. So for that reason I make 'Excercise, and Healthier Eating' my New Years Resolution.
