The Thanksgiving That I Remember Well; A Long Time Ago

When I saw the topic for Story Tellers this week, and I unearthed the memories of all those Thanksgivings past, this one stood out for the story. This is not my favorite Thanksgiving, or the one that I would be keeping close to the heart, as a special family time. This was my last Thanksgiving in high school, and it was a special year before graduation, and moving out into a world of real life problems. This holiday was like remembering your first love, it had substance, and hope.
By late September, it was clear this was a winning football team, and the green and white was going to be the State Champions. Even those who didn't like football were participating in the pep ralllies. There was a buzz in the air, when everyone knew our team was going all the way....even as I had predicted to my new boyfriend. There were other male friends, who came by to play rummy, and we all talked on our landline phones.
“Please realize I kept the article GENERIC, so that what happened, and the content of the memory are the focus, not me, where, or when, etc.”
The victory of our team on Thanksgiving Day, the great meal we had after sitting out in the cold air, and the joy teens have in those new romances......all played a part in this memorable Thanksgiving. The atmosphere was charged with electricity, and the Turkey was perfect, there were those special touches only a mother can add to the meal; oyster stuffing, signature gravy, and yummy deserts. Yes, it was a great meal, with great expectations for coming months.
Is there life after high school? Sure there is, and that last year flew by, and when the curtain came down on the senior play, and that pink A line gown from the senior prom was packed away; new plans arose that sent us all in different directions. Graduation brought tears, and realizations that there were going to be a very different set of holidays next year; some would head for college, many would find full time jobs, and some would be sent to Vietnam.
The joy of being the Football Champions would remain always...and that exciting game on Thanksgiving Day would never be forgotten. Romances that were intense would eventually fade away, but with what our generation would face; we would need the safe and happy memories united behind the green and white. Many names are on that Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC; some neighbors, some friends, but always Champions in our hearts today. Happy Thanksgiving.
