A Book That I Used To Read To My Son

Growing up is sometimes hard, and one of the ways that Mothers or Dads can alleviate the stress of the day is to read a book at bedtime to their children. There was always songs and reading at bedtime, when my son was young, because I worked. There were several books he liked, but he loved the one about a cat on a wharf named 'Fish Head". This cat ate the discarded heads the fishermen threw his way, and that is how he got his name, and survived.

Last week at Sunday Dinner, there was a discussion about reading, and he brought up that book, Fish Head. I laughed, because that was many years ago, so to remember it was classic. There were other books that meant a lot, such as C.S. Lewis' "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe", which was so respected in Christian circles. And that story took a long time to read, in sections at bedtime.

The independence of Fish Head, and his ability to live on his own, with the throw aways of the fisherman was interesting to a little boy. That type of life is much like the pirates, who steal what they need, and it appears to be a romantic life. I don't remember a lot about Fish Head, but I remember one line "he was that kind of cat".  Something special and different, and set apart from other cats.

I can still see the book cover, of this cat watching the fishermen on the wharf, and waiting his turn to get those leftover heads, after they were done cleaning the fish. Standing and observing the wharf, from a distance, patiently.

Sometimes we are impressed by an allegory, or a great historical book, maybe a famous figure of great importance,  and sometimes it's just a cat, albeit an unusual cat. What stirs the minds of children is sometimes what leads their path, or maybe it's their sense of humor, and the book's subject makes them laugh. That seems to be what my son got, some laughter from an unusual book.

Isn't it fun and amazing how small images get preserved as you parent? I find this with myself, and I think sometimes a book, or a bit of advice, or an exchange become the little photo of the interchange. Lovely article.
