These Boys Can Always Make Me Laugh

The older we get, the more relaxed we usually become around children. Once I heard it said, that the oldest child is usually the more tense, and responsible of the siblings. The second child is even less inhibited, and feels more freedom, and lack of parental pressure. By the time the third child is born, it has become so routine for the parents, that this child will experience freedom, to go where ever it wants. No more "stand up straight"," eat your peas", or the "pressures" of a new fearful parent. Some parents do treat all of the children alike, so out goes the cliches. Growing up differently is what makes us who we are.

My oldest grandson is very serious at times, and responsible. When he was about four, I picked him up in the car for a fun Saturday. He was obviously upset with his mother, by the way he slammed the door. We were driving down the road, and he started questioning me. "Nana, I am smart, aren't I?" "Sure, I said", then he hit me "Nana, I'm really smart, aren't I?". Then I knew something was up, so cautiously I answered, "Yes, you are". Then he let go with "WELL! My mother thinks she's smarter than I am, but she's not!" It was so funny, with me trying not to laugh, that I could hardly drive. Grayson has always been a 'let me see, if I can shock you" kind of child.

The oldest was always afraid of the dark, when he was small. However, Jake, the second grandson was never afraid of anything. When Jake was about two, which made Grayson, about five and half. There were almost daily instances of the toys, which were put away the night before, showing up on the floor in the morning. My son and his wife were blaming Grayson for getting up in the middle of the night to play, and not waking them.

This made me laugh, and I told them "it is not him", it's Jake. "No way, it couldn't be him, no way, he's only two" was their answer. Jake had just gotten out of the crib, into the big boy's bed, so they weren't buying it. I told my son, just stay up, and watch. Sure enough, here was this little guy, at midnight getting up after everyone had gone to bed, and playing, until he was tired enough to go to sleep. No need to turn on a light, for the all night outside light gave plenty of light. In fact, later on they had to add locks 'at the top of the door' to keep him inside. By three he was ready, to take it to the outside.

Well, a few years go by, and with my back issues, I'm a regular user of the Chiropractor. So on the day of my appointment, I have Jake (now 7) with me. I signed in for my appointment, and since we are in the office alone, the doctor leaves the adjustment room door open. My adjustments are made, and I write a check. Jake and I spend the day doing some fun things, and on the way home, I casually asked "Have you decided what you want to be when you grow up?" No one could have prepared me for his answer:

"Well, either a Policeman, or a Chiropractor. I thought that last one odd, so I asked "Why a Chiropractor?" Jake seriously replied "Well, the people come in, it's snap, crackle, pop, and you get your money!" That was so funny. This was exactly how my appointment had gone.

Jake's now in high school, and playing football, and the idea of a Chiropractor has faded, but he still plans on being in law enforcement. For him, it's the right thing, and he has the 'no fear' personality for it. Grayson is in college, and is proving daily how smart he really is. They both still make me laugh.
