Hot & Spicy Food Can Be Good For You

I love hot and spicy food. Today we went and had jalapeno burgers, with the mustard, lettuce and cheese. Of course they use those canned jalapenos, but, none the less, it is a culinary delight. I just love anything mexican, and although red meat should be eaten in small quantities, these burgers have two patties. I think the real trick is the foil wrapper, because it causes all those flavors to blend together, while hot and being transported to your car. Yep, its just a simple Sonic thing, but I love it. I love breakfast burritos, and I like to make those myself. I learned to love those when I lived in the southwest, and that was a very long time ago. If you keep burgers trips few throughout the month, and omit the potatoes you can eat somewhat healthy at fast food restaurants.  Try a side salad, because places like Wendy's allow you to have one in place of the fries.

I was thinking how very little actual good food is out there on the food strips, and I'm not a fast food fan. However, as an American there is nothing better than a good burger once in a while. I don't like french fries and never did, just too greasy and bland. I can eat a chip or two once in a while, but really a nice kosher pickle makes life wonderful. I order sandwiches ala carte, because all those potatoes are really the weight busters for people who eat out. Carbs are a no no, unles you understand the glycemic index charts, so if you want to lose weight, then eliminate those carbs, as many as possible. Never, ever supersize, and if you are really hungry, then get two sandwiches; especially if it's the hoagie type yeast rolls....not very fattening. I couldn't eat two, but maybe you've worked hard all day, and need more volume to bite and fill that growlling stomach.

Speaking of hoagie rolls, it's by far the best sandwich out there, and I learned that up north. Oh, for those of you south of Maryland (I'm a native southerner myself), it's a subway. I love real philly cheesesteaks (I use provolone cheese) and those webers (cheesesteaks with tom, onion, mayo). Now if I am not having a weber I like to put some italian marinara sauce on my steak sandwich...not much; just a couple of tablespoons, for an italian zesty taste. Now South Philly just slaps some of that yellow whiz cheese on the steak with the roll, and that's it...but I have more sophisticated taste. I love some grilled onions, mushrooms, and green peppers with my melted provolone and steak. Some use steakums, and that's okay, but the real shredded steak is terrific. A melt in your mouth extravaganza.

Pizza is another winner, because it can have anything you want on it. I've seen fruit, spinach, goats cheese, and fish with eyeballs on it. I know Chicago loves the deep dish pizza, and New York has the pepperoni, and in New Jersey its just a pie, it's not a pizza, just a pie. I like the very thin crispy crust pepperoni pizza. Not a bunch of stuff on it, and just sauce, cheese and pepperoni, then I dust some hot pepper flakes and parmeson to "kick it up a notch", to quote Emeril. Pizza is like eggs, its good for you in small quanities, but it got a bad rap. I read a column last year saying the same thing, it's sad these researchers are like media reporters and the spin goes where their taste buds are. Now anything is bad for you if you binge eat, or don't care about nutrition. Don't forget the eight galsses of water that help you digest all that food. There is a balance in all things in life, it's finding that balance that's hard. Now next time you have mexican, italian or a jalapeno burger, just think of me. Did I make you hungry? Go out and Enjoy!
